Methanogens, which convert one-and two-carbon compounds into the important atmospheric gas methane, are the largest group among the Archaebacteria. Of all microbial groups methanogens provide perhaps the best opportunity to study evolution, because of their phylogenetic diversity and unique biochemistry.
