About this book

Masaccio è il giovane autore della Madonna col Bambino, detta "del solletico", raffigurata in una tavoletta non più grande di un libro, un'anconetta per la devozione privata. È stupefacente accorgersi di quanta perizia tecnica e sapienza psicologica l'artista abbia saputo infondere in questo dipinto, in cui Maria gioca con suo Figlio, accarezzandolo sotto il mento con due dita alzate. La tenera attitudine, che evoca la benedizione, si tramuta in solletico, suscitando la difensiva e divertita reazione del Bambino espressa con un riso spontaneo e con le manine aggrappate al polso della Madre. Sul retro della tavola si prospetta lo stemma del committente Antonio Casini, un principe della Chiesa creato prete cardinale del titolo di San Marcello nel 1426, data di riferimento anche per l'esecuzione dell'opera. Teologo e umanista, egli si distinse come mecenate di opere raffinatissime tra Siena, Firenze, Grosseto e Roma, fra le quali, la Madonna di Masaccio si configura come un tangibile segno del legame intenso del Casini con la Vergine.00Exhibition: Complesso monumentale del Duomo di Siena, Siena, Italy (22.05-02.11.2021).
