When the last MGB rolled from the sudden emptiness of Abingdon's redundant production line on 22 October 1980, it ended an era of sports car motoring which could be said to have begun there some eighteen years and four months earlier when the first production MGB was built but which, in truth, had its roots at least as far back as the early 1920s.
