Archibald Gordon Macdonell was a Scottish writer, journalist, and broadcaster. He was born in Poona, India, to a Scottish family. He served as a lieutenant of the Royal Field Artillery during World War I. He then joined the League of Nations in 1922. He later made his living as a journalist in London, writing stage reviews for the *London Mercury*. He became famous in 1933 for the publication of the satirical novel *England, their England*. Also highly praised is his *Autobiography of a Cad*, a grimly comic portrait of a 1930s Tory. He also wrote a number of novels and plays, as well as some military history.
