Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist, journalist, and humanist. He was a part of the transition between Transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.[1] His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. Arthur Golden was an English professor emeritus at the City College of the City University of New York, known for his work on Walt Whitman. He co-edited *Leaves of Grass: A Textual Variorum of the Printed Poems* and edited *Walt Whitman's Blue Book.* Golden was a Fulbright Scholar and was affiliated with the university until his death in 2016.
