An American-Irish novelist, playwright and essayist. He adapted four of his own works of fiction into plays: The Ginger Man, A Singular Man, The Saddest Summer of Samuel S, and The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B. He also once wrote a novel (A Fairy Tale of New York) that developed out of his own earlier play, Fairy Tales of New York. Four of the plays (Ginger Man, Fairy Tales of New York, Singular Man, Saddest Summer of Samuel S) were collected in "The Plays of J. P. Donleavy," but otherwise are less widely available than his fiction and nonfiction works.
