Not until he was 30 years old did Raymond Hull discover his own writing talent. It was only after responding to an advertisement for a summer school course in creative writing, at the University of British Columbia, that he was encouraged to believe that he had an aptitude for writing. Over the next eight years, Hull continued to study and write in his spare time, attending night school and summer school courses, writers' clubs and conferences, all the time supporting himself by a succession of low paying jobs.
