Widely regarded as one of the most iconic figures in South Asian cinema, he dominated Pakistani Urdu cinema during the 1970s and 1980s as its leading box-office hero. ​After starting as a playback singer, Baig made a star-making acting debut in the 1967 blockbuster Chakori.
